As manufacturers of athletic uniforms, one of our more interesting dilemmas over the years has been in the design, construction and embellishment of wrestling uniforms. Of all of the sports, the balance between comfort, functionality and appearance in wrestling is most critical. Wrestlers face enough adversity on the mat without having to be concerned with the performance of their apparel.

Two important developments over the last decade have transformed the manufacturing process with regard to wrestling…

• The advent of “Spandex” and “Lycra” type materials
• The development of “sublimation”

Spandex and Lycra material have revolutionized wrestling uniforms (singlets). These new materials provide everything that you would look for in a wrestling fabric. The old fabrics that we used were primarily double knit nylons and polyesters. They were very durable but didn’t give much and were considerably heavier then need be. They could also be extremely uncomfortable. By contrast, spandex and lycra are lightweight, comfortable and can stretch with the body.

The only drawback to these new fabrics has been in the decoration of them. Due to their extreme “stretchiness,” they once presented many problems with embellishment. Screen-printing looked fine at first but the inks would deteriorate quickly since they could not possibly stretch as much as the fabric. Swiss embroidery and tackletwill solved that problem since they were actually “sewn” into the garment, but the stitches that were necessary on the inside of the singlet could be very abrasive to the wrestler.

The development of “sublimation” has solved the graphics problem and much more.

• With sublimation, all lettering, logos, etc. are dyed directly into the fabric itself and are as soft and pliable as the fabric.
• Sublimation can be done in unlimited color combinations and there is almost no limit to the graphic capabilities that are possible.
• On top of that, the sublimated design will actually last as long as the material itself. It’s truly a win-win situation.
